Phoenix Coyotes History
The Phoenix Coyotes were originally formed back in 1972 from the remnants of the Winnipeg Jets. The Jets began as a talented team in the World Hockey Association, and they were officially adopted into the NHL in 1979-1980. When the Jets were eventually purchased by new owners, they were subsequently relocated to a new Southwestern home. The Jets landed in Phoenix, Arizona in 1996, and fittingly became the Coyotes. Unlike many new franchises, the Coyotes enjoyed immediate success in their new home, making five playoff appearances within their first six seasons.
While the Coyotes endured some tough seasons in the mid-2000s, resurgence came in 2009 with the hiring of head coach Dave Tippett. In just his first season behind the Phoenix bench, Tippett helped the Coyotes post a franchise best of 50 regular season wins and 107 points. When goalie Ilya Bryzgalov was traded to the Philadelphia Flyers in 2011, Phoenix signed an unproven goalie in Mike Smith. While many believed the Coyotes would suffer a setback from these transactions, Phoenix enjoyed its most successful season to date behind the brilliant goaltending of Mike Smith. The Coyotes clinched their first Pacific Division title, and went on to defeat the Chicago Blackhawks and Nashville Predators en route to their first Western Conference Finals appearance in franchise history.
